De nombreux \u00e9vang\u00e9liques Fran\u00e7ais utilisent Martin Luther King comme exemple d’\u00e9vang\u00e9lique c\u00e9l\u00e8bre. Mais je me suis souvent demand\u00e9 si cette th\u00e9se \u00e9tait valide. Voici quelques \u00e9l\u00e8ments de r\u00e9ponse.<\/p>\n

Dans un article sur son blog de la Gospel coalition intitul\u00e9 en Anglais: “9 Things You should know about Martin Luther King Junior”<\/a>, Joe Carter \u00e9crit au sujet de la th\u00e9ologie de Martin Luther King :<\/p>\n

King held unorthodox views on theology, which he expressed during his time at Crozer Theological Seminary. In a paper he wrote for a systematic theology class he cast skeptical aspersions on the doctrines of divine Sonship, the Virgin Birth (“. . . the evidence for the tenability of this doctrine is too shallow to convince any objective thinker”), and the Resurrection (“. . . the external evidence for the authenticity of this doctrine is found wanting”). In the conclusion of another paper he writes,<\/p>\n

Others doctrines such as a supernatural plan of salvation, the Trinity, the substitutionary theory of the atonement, and the second coming of Christ are all quite prominent in fundamentalist thinking. Such are the views of the fundamentalist and they reveal that he is opposed to theological adaptation to social and cultural change. He sees a progressive scientific age as a retrogressive spiritual age. Amid change all around he is willing to preserve certain ancient ideas even though they are contrary to science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Il semblerait que Martin Luther King ai eu des doutes au sujet des doctrines fondamentales au christianisme: la divinit\u00e9 de Christ, sa conception d’une vierge, sa r\u00e9surrection, la Trinit\u00e9, l’expiation substitutives.<\/p>\n

Suite \u00e0 une discussion dans les commentaires de l’article, il ressort que \u00a0les positions th\u00e9ologiques de Martin Luther King aient \u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0plut\u00f4t Protestantes lib\u00e9rales qu’\u00e9vang\u00e9liques. Il reniait la plupart des doctrines\u00a0ch\u00e8res\u00a0aux\u00a0\u00e9vang\u00e9liques, doctrines qu’il consid\u00e9rait comme fondamentalistes.<\/p>\n

Pourquoi les \u00e9vang\u00e9liques Fran\u00e7ais classent-ils Martin Luther King parmi eux? Cela pourrait venir d’une confusion. Martin Luther King \u00e9tait Baptiste et venait du Sud des Etats-Unis. La plus grande d\u00e9nomination \u00e9vang\u00e9lique est la Southern Baptist Convention. Mais King n’en \u00e9tait pas membre. Il \u00e9tait\u00a0plut\u00f4t\u00a0pr\u00e9sident de la\u00a0Southern Christian Leadership Conference. On peut \u00eatre Baptiste et venir du Sud des Etats-Unis, sans pour autant \u00eatre \u00e9vang\u00e9lique.<\/p>\n
